Darktrace’s State of AI Cybersecurity 2024 Report found that 74% of organizations surveyed are seeing AI-powered cyber threats have a significant impact on operations, with 60% admitting they are inadequately prepared to defend against AI-powered threats and attacks. 

However, the advent of generative AI comes with the potential to revolutionize this ever-changing sector and with cyber threats evolving rapidly, organizations are looking to prioritize innovative solutions to stay ahead of malicious actors.

One example saw a finance worker at a multinational firm in Hong Kong pay out $25 million to fraudsters who were using deep fake technology to pose as C-Suite executives on a video call. “(In the) multi-person video conference, it turns out that everyone [he saw] was fake,” senior superintendent Baron Chan Shun-ching told the city’s public broadcaster RTHK.  

In another similar example from 2022, the Brazilian crypto exchange, BlueBenx, was duped by criminals using AI to impersonate Binance COO Patrick Hillmann. They were tricked into sending $200,000 and 25 million BNX tokens, all because of a convincing Zoom call.
