Who Gets Left Out? Embodying the Systems Behind Generative Models
Facilitated by Maya Georgieva, Senior Director at the Innovation Center at The New School and Parsons School of Design, this session examines how artistic and design practices can uncover the hidden extractive systems of artificial intelligence, from resource and data extraction to labor.
Through Artificial Us, artists Tiago Aragona and Matias Piña explore how art can function as a method of critical inquiry, revealing the biases, material dependencies, and socio-technical systems that underlie generative AI.
The discussion invites reflection on a central question: Who gets left out of the datasets used in generative models? Participants will engage with creative strategies to reclaim agency over artificial intelligence as a medium through local dataset curation, decentralization, and embodied design, connecting technology, community storytelling, and cultural preservation through these practices.
