Unlocking the Path to Publication: Insights from Senior Publisher, Randi Slack
The AI Summit Series is thrilled to spotlight an exclusive interview with Randi Slack, Senior Publisher at Taylor & Francis, ahead of her upcoming session, "How to Get Published" at The AI Summit New York. With over two decades of experience in publishing and a career dedicated to emerging technologies like AI and machine learning, Randi brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. Her passion for amplifying groundbreaking research and empowering new voices in the AI community is evident throughout her journey.
In this interview, Randi shares her experiences working with transformative authors like Calvin Lawrence, IBM’s former CTO of Responsible AI, whose book, Hidden in White Sight, has sparked critical conversations about bias in AI. She also debunks myths about the publishing process, offers advice to aspiring authors intimidated by writing, and highlights the exciting role AI is playing in reshaping the publishing industry.
The AI Summit Series: With 24 years in publishing, what drew you to focus on emerging technologies like AI and machine learning?
Randi Slack: My entire career in publishing has focused on emerging technologies and their transformative impact on industries and societies. The field of AI and machine learning represents cutting-edge innovation, and publishing in these areas allows for the dissemination of groundbreaking research and ideas. The opportunity to contribute to shaping the future by amplifying voices in AI and machine learning is both exciting and rewarding.
The AI Summit Series: Can you share a story about a manuscript or author that particularly impressed you? What made that proposal or writer stand out from the crowd?
Randi Slack: I was very fortunate to work with Calvin Lawrence, who was IBM’s first ever and former CTO of Responsible AI. His book, Hidden in White Sight: How AI Empowers and Deepens Systemic Racism is a ground-breaking book that explores how bias in AI impacts marginalized communities. The book has received a lot of attention and has sparked important conversations within the AI community. Publishing this impactful book has been a highlight of my career.
The AI Summit Series: You're speaking to Future AI Leaders at The AI Summit New York about getting published. What inspired you to share your expertise with this next generation of thought leaders?
Randi Slack: I hope that sharing my expertise with future AI leaders is an opportunity to empower the next generation of innovators. By guiding them on how to get published, the session aims to help them amplify their ideas, contribute to the global conversation on AI, and establish themselves as thought leaders in their field. I love working with new authors to nurture emerging talent and ensure their groundbreaking work reaches a wider audience.
The AI Summit Series: What would surprise most aspiring authors about how publishing really works?
Randi Slack: One of the biggest myths about publishing is likely the perception that it is an inaccessible or overly complex process. Aspiring authors might be surprised to learn that publishers are actively seeking fresh voices and innovative ideas, and that the process is more collaborative than they might expect. Publishers work closely with authors to refine their work and ensure its success.
The AI Summit Series: Many AI professionals are brilliant at what they do but intimidated by the idea of writing a book. What would you say to someone who thinks "I'm not a writer"?
Randi Slack: I work with many authors who are initially intimidated by writing, and my advice is to focus on their expertise and unique perspective. Writing a book is not about being a literary genius; it's about sharing knowledge and insights in a way that resonates with readers. Publishers and editors are there to help refine the writing, so the most important thing is to start and let the ideas flow.
The AI Summit Series: Without giving away your session secrets, can you tell us about an author you've worked with who started as a complete newcomer to publishing?
Randi Slack: Calvin Lawrence is a great example of a newcomer to publishing who has found great success, and I have many other great examples. Most authors I work with are newcomers to publishing. Through collaboration with us, a new author can transform their ideas into a compelling book, ultimately establishing themselves as a respected voice in their industry.
The AI Summit Series: What do you enjoy most about working with first-time authors? What's the most rewarding part of helping someone get their first book published?
Randi Slack: I love witnessing the growth and confidence many first-time authors develop as they navigate the publishing process. It is so rewarding to help an author bring their ideas to life and see their work make an impact in their field. Seeing a happy author hold their first book in their hands brings me a lot of joy and I am proud of all of the authors I have worked with in my career.
The AI Summit Series: What trends are you most excited about in the publishing world right now?
Randi Slack: The impact of AI on the publishing industry is very interesting to witness. AI is poised to significantly transform the publishing industry, influencing everything from content creation and editing to distribution and audience engagement. AI is already being used to assist in content creation, and its role will only grow in the future. It has the potential to revolutionize the editing process by making it faster and more efficient. It can also enable publishers to better understand and engage with their audiences. I am also excited to how AI will enable the development of innovative business models in publishing in the future. It is an exciting time for the entire publishing industry!
The AI Summit Series: For someone attending The AI Summit New York who's never considered writing a book before, what might make them think "maybe I should explore this"?
Randi Slack: I hope many attendees will be inspired to consider writing a book if they realize the potential to share their expertise, establish themselves as thought leaders, and contribute to shaping the future of AI. Publishing a book can amplify their ideas and open doors to new opportunities, and it is not as challenging as one might initially expect. I hope that I can make the process more transparent and accessible to new authors.
The AI Summit Series: Without spoiling the surprise, what's one thing attendees will walk away from your session knowing that they didn't know before?
Randi Slack: I hope attendees will walk away with a deeper understanding of the publishing process and practical insights on how to turn their ideas into a published work. They might also learn strategies for overcoming common challenges and misconceptions about writing and publishing.
